Full Bloom

Midnight on a Wednesday, it’s quiet and hours before I sleep… I’ve rarely been this tired.

I remember nothing about the sleep except using the bathroom and waking up without the alarm.

It’s another gorgeous October day and life is in full bloom! I see Jason walking down Queen Street in his sock feet.

He grunts hello and in the aftermath…

I realize I am the lucky one.

Concussed

The fall, the hit, quietly concussed…

He came so close to death or bust.

Miracles they said, oh how they fussed.

Never quite the same, in God we trust.

Reframed and shattered by the fall.

A perspective changed or not at all.

Strange the art that some do call.

Or a concussed mess meant to appall?

A Win

I won the argument!

She relented and said I was right…

The age of miracles might be upon us?

Or maybe I am learning to splain myself better?

I’m leaning towards miracle.

Thank you God!

Those Things You Say

I asked her if she had low or high self esteem… without hesitation she said, “low.”

And followed that surprise with, “And I know where it comes from.”

“Do share.”

“When I was a kid, I wasn’t good at board games or school. My cousin said I wasn’t very intelligent.”

“How old was your cousin?”

“10”

“You do realize don’t you that most 10 year olds don’t know shit from good chocolate?”

A beautiful bright 25 years old woman who appears to have it all together is being handicapped by a 15 year old comment of a child?!?!

And we believe the things we say don’t matter.Dennis Mantin

Going Going Gone

It’s the hard sell…

No one can say for certain what happens at and after the moment of death, however everyone has to die to get there.

To move past death we have to die to grow. I thought when I was a kid I would live forever. My mother died when I was 11 and all thoughts of forever were going going gone.

Alcohol failed where faith won. It’s not so much fear of death anymore as it is loving the Joy’s of life.

This Wondrous Thing

To be part of this wondrous thing… To recognize this for what it is. To watch and be. To learn in awe and see transcended moments. The thing I can’t explain is God. I don’t feel that need anymore. Just a gratitude of being here experiencing life and art and parenting. This wondrous thing of being a friend to my child and growing with her: being willing to share and learn from her. I feel blessed.Dennis Mantin

Moments Like These

She said I was selfish and made it sound sane. I said I’m not buying this forecast for rain. She said it with anger and made it quite clear. She said it was love and needs me right here. I said You’re so young with a future so bright. She was through listening and pining for spite. It’s moments like these that make living with pain. Seem worthless and joyous, a confusing refrain. The emotions and beauty, the huff and the puff. This stage worthy drama is hardly enough. So it’s hookers or solitaire, I really don’t know. The Marriage is off, and I’m off to the show.Dennis Mantin
