When Dean Wormer told Mr. Horfman in ‘Animal House,’Drunk fat and stupid is no way to go through life boy.’ I listened!
It took me a while to put it into practice, but… I heard!
17 Years Sober!

She said, “When I’m an adult I won’t forget what it’s like to be a kid.”
“Are you sure?” I asked.
“That’s why I will be a good mother… I will know what it’s like to be a kid and not overreact to the small stuff.”
“I remember what it’s like to be a kid, and I still overreact sometimes.”
“You’re a good Dad.”

The guy serving Coffee casually asked me what I was up to today.
I answered, “Nothing much, just dropped my daughter off at school.”
He seemed to smile behind a mask…
“Enjoy your freedom.” He said and continued. “Even if the quality of teaching isn’t great; at least they teach the kids some civility on how to get along.”
“Yes it’s nice to have the teachers back.”

I fear if God is watching then he must be plenty bored.
Not much new is going on, still driving that old Ford.
The bums are still out hangin and the drunks are down and out.
The lovers have all gone inside and the agnostics have their doubt.
The investors lost their money and the leaves are turning brown.
The church it seems so empty and that sun is going down.

I was tired when I woke up and that didn’t change a thing.
Someone spilled milk in the kitchen, it was me; not gonna sing.
All quiet at the library except the drunks and druggies lied.
They are lined up on the sidewalk and scream at who’s inside.
I’m not saying much these days; keeping my head on right and low.
My keys still work on my front door and that’s where I’m going to go.

Long weekend means short work week. I’m not going in.
The kid is going back to school and both feels like a win!
Oh I’m not saying I won’t miss her cause that would be a lie.
But there’s going to be a smile when I wave bye bye.

She’s been quiet in the suburbs; walks a dog on cul-de-sac.
She’s getting wise on wine and proverbs; and she’s not coming back.
There’s a smile on my face now; I’m afraid its here to stay.
The cul-de-sac goes round and round; so quiet far away.

“A hypocrite is the only type of person that is rotten to the core.”
Until I had read this I must confess I never really thought about it.
I had found however a certain disdain for individuals who would tell me how honest they were or how spiritual they are… and until I read the aforementioned quote I never really realized what a hypocrite is.

A day of sun and shadows and warplanes passing by.
A night of cool lake breezes where madness has a cry.
I’m quiet and reflective with somewhere I would rather be.
No crying over spilled milk here, just dream of land by sea.
